Rui Xavier was born in Oporto in 1974 and lived most of his childhood and youth in Caxinas, the small fishing comunity of Vila do Conde, in the North of Portugal.
In 1995 he completed the bachelors degree in Audiovisual Communication Technologies at the Instituto Politécnico, Porto, where he grew an interest in Photography and Film. He continued his studies and, in 1997, he concluded a Post-Graduation in Photojournalism at University of Wales, Cardiff.
He went on to work as a photographer for the London based British newspaper “The Independent”.
In 1998 he returned to Portugal to work as a freelancer and in 2000 he is awarded the Visão Photojournalism Prize.
By this time he started to experiment with video, making small documentaries, and started Ricochete Filmes with Bruno Gonçalves.
In 2003 together with other photographers he sets up a photographers collective: Kameraphoto.
From 2003 to 2005, he worked as picture editor at Grande Reportagem, a current affairs magazine.
Since 2006 he has worked on various areas of film making as a cinematographer, cameraman, sound operator, video editor and still photographer.
In 2007 he makes his first fiction film, Surface, which is awarded a Special Mention of the Juri at the 58th Berlin International Film Festival, and the AIP / Fujifilm Award for Best Cinematography in Portuguese Short Film at the Indie Lisboa 08 Film Festival.
